Star Of David Mosaic Craft For Kids

I love making mosaics, so when judaica web store asked me to try out their star of David mosaic kit, from their Jewish gifts for kids collection,  just couldn't resist. and of course I was secretly hoping that at least one of my kids would actually finish the whole project without my having to step in and finish it, and hurray, my ten year old stepped up to the plate and over the course of three evenings finished the mosaic with only a little help from mom.

The kit comes with everything you need and I love the fact that it isn't something that is finished too quickly, kits like that are in my opinion not all that worthwhile. It is great to work on something that takes enough time that one has a sense of pride in the finished product! And the idea of glueing a photocopy of the mosaic onto the base is actually quite a great idea, maybe we'll do that for a larger mosaic that we'll design ourselves, sometime….. Oh, and just for the record, the mosaic tiles included in the kit can be cut with scissors! Yes, these is mess involved, but nothing that can't be easily swept up.

The mosaic pieces are sorted by color and then glued to the base, starting with the star first and then filling in the background. I love how the mosaic looks without grout, but the grouting of it makes it into a finished piece, and kids get to understand how all tiling is done!

The results once grouted really are gorgeous, and I think this would make a great piece of art to hang on a garden wall, as the mix of greenery and mosaic is a fabulous combination. Oh, and just by the way, as my kids were making the mosaic I was of course eyeing the tiles to see if there would be any left over, and sure enough there were! So I whipped up another little mosaic project which I'll be sure to share with you soon!
