Summer Camp Crafts: Havdalah Candle Craft From Old Candles
Remember the story about the huge bag of unsightly old candles that accidentally ended up at our house, and how I decided to make upcycled candles? Well dear readers here is confirmation that indeed there are no accidents, as that bag of candles that was destined for the garbage (in any one else’s house, and almost ours as well!) became festive striped havdalah candles. (We use the havdalah candle on Saturday night when Shabbat is over to usher in the new week, and it needs to have two or more wicks.) I almost can’t believe it myself, and the gorgeous array of candles that we created have been decorating the…

Welcome To Craft Schooling Sunday!
Welcome to Craft Schooling Sunday, I hope everyone is well and finding time for creativity, ah yes, and thanks for joining me here! June is almost over, yikes, and I did not accomplish my goal of learning to use Procreate, but hopefully will make myself start on that this coming week. Last November ordered an apple pencil and an ipad to get the ball rolling, and my daughter did start to delve into the world of digital illustration, but I have yet to do that, sigh. Using Procreate could help me in soooooo many ways, mostly in getting together some of those book ideas that are simmering so long they’ve…

Queen Anne’s Lace In Bloom Everywhere In Northern Israel
I love witnessing the yearly cycle of the fields and hillsides just outside our front door, and the brilliant cascade of color sometimes associated with that! In the spring vivid green becomes hills of rolling yellow, then dotted by red and white, and then comes all things purple, like thistles of all kinds (which I must photograph this coming week) and now we are enjoying a dense bloom of Queen Anne’s lace, otherwise known as wild carrot, bird’s nest, and bishop’s lace. Daucus carota, is its real name, and is a white, flowering plant, with tall stocks and a very interesting flower. Yes, it is a weed, but a lovely…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Learning To Draw Simple Botanical Borders
It has now been more than a month since I started seriously filling up the pages in my sketchbook, and the process has been truly amazing. I have roughly another 29 pages yet to fill, so within a month or so I can buy a new sketchbook and start another journey, this time from scratch, (this sketchbook was half filled 20 plus years ago…..) can’t wait! In the mean time I will continue sharing some of the things I’ve been up to, which I hope will encourage you to take even 15 minutes out of your busy day and spend it in your sketchbook. Yes, Yes, Yes, I highly encourage…

Three Simple Ways To Fix Sketchbook Mistakes
One of the things that always kept me from really delving into a sketchbook practice was that I was afraid of making mistakes, yes indeed! Of course I make mistakes all the time, but in the case of a sketchbook those mistakes would be stuck in the sketchbook forever, as one does not tear out pages! Maybe a bit on the perfectionist side, I know, but what can I do, I’d rather forget about my mistakes, or better yet if I could view the mistakes as successes? You might think that this problem would keep me from ever touching a sketchbook, and it has, sometimes. Other times I just have…

Garden Crafts: DIY Rustic Tomato Cage From Sticks
While I have never grown cherry tomatoes, I do know that tomato plants of all kinds generally need support as the tomatoes can get quite heavy, causing the plant to fall over or even break otherwise. So, while the organic tomato seedlings I bought from a local homesteader a month or so ago have yet to actually grow to their expected 1 meter height or provide us with cherry tomatoes just yet, I figured I’d get started on a DIY cherry tomato cage made from sticks, as then hopefully the plant will have more confidence to keep on growing! And even if I wanted to run to the garden supply…
