Giant Granny Square Chair Pad Crocheted With T-Shirt Yarn
Ready for a fun project using commercial t-shirt yarn that adds a wonderful decorative touch to your home or outdoor space? Crochet a giant granny square chair pad in just a few hours, and you'll certainly want to make a whole bunch! And the fun part about crocheting with commercial t-shirt yarn is that the results are quite thick, so this really does pad the chair. Not to mention of course that this is much easier to wash than a chair pad with a foam insert.
If this chair pad has got you thinking that you'd like to make a whole rug using giant t-shirt yarn granny squares, well you are on the right track, but I do have thoughts you may want to consider first. Keep on reading…..
First of all, because t-shirt yarn is often made from factory left overs, there may be inconsistency from skein to skein, thickness wise and weight wise. If you are using a few different colors made from fabrics that are not identical, you may have to increase or decrease the number of stitches in your pattern in order to keep it the desired shape.
Second of all, because of the stretchy nature of the t-shirt yarn, making a square with straight edges is very difficult. I tried to finish off this granny square chair pad with several different skeins of t-shirt yarn before it actually worked, and fortunately was the best result visually. While I haven't tried it myself, more than five or six rounds of a square granny square may or may not produce great results, not to discourage you entirely, just take this into conderation.
So about that rug made or giant granny squares crocheted from t-shirt yarn: I have serious doubts whether one could make such a rug that would produce a straight and neat grid of squares. If you aren't so pickly so make a few and see, but if you are, you may want to stick with round rugs, which totally works with the t-shirt yarn.
You'll Need:
- commercial t-shirt yarn and a size 10mm hook ( I used five colors, you can easily get away with three or four, or try it in one color for a more neutral result)
- basic granny square pattern
Giant Granny Square Chair Pad Pattern:
Using commercial t-shirt yarn, crochet a granny square with 6 rounds, or the number necessary for your chair size.
Finish square with a border of double crochet stitches with corners consisting of (3DC Chain 3 3 DC) into the corner space.
Crochet chains of about 50 stitches to use as ties, and simply thread ties through the two back corners.
