Brutalist Architecture In Montreal: Habitat 1967 Apartment Complex

Montreal Habitat 1967

You may not know this, but among my many interests, one of them happens to be architecture, so of course on our recent trip to Montreal I just had to have a look at Moshe Safdie’s 1967 World’s Fair Brutalist masterpiece entitled Habitat. Personally I have a love/hate relationship with Brutalist style architecture, and in this case I’d say my reaction was 100% love. Well except for the fact that the guard of the complex really doesn’t allow you to wonder around to get a better look. Fair enough of course, people live here and I can imagine that they quite simply don’t need any more curious folks poking around. As far as poking around, that is actually one of the things I’m pretty good at, and this time it actually led to a really interesting discovery, so keep on reading!

The back side of the complex facing the Stl Laurence proper. The other side faces water as well and with a great view of the downtown area, below.

Bikes are very popular in Montreal, and infact the whole city bike rental system originated here! As did Cirque du Soleil!

Ah yes, as far as that little idea of poking around, here’s just a little hint, rushing water!
Montreal Habitat 1967This lovely little bit or wild nature right in the city was truly a surprise, and the only way I discovered it was that I started following the folks carrying surf boards down a narrow little path just behind habitat……..and I discovered urban surfing on real rapids! For photos of that, take a look at my post Surfing In Montreal.

Hope you enjoyed this little tour, this spot was truly one of the highlights of our trip!
