A Crocheted Canary Beanie Hat Makes A Great Costume, Or Just Because.

Crocheted Bird Hat Canary For Costyme

A crocheted beanie can be decorated in so many fun ways to use as part of a costume or to make cold weather dressing a little bit fun. This fun canary beanie, which could of course be just about any kind of bird you like, just change the colors a bit, was crocheted for my daughter for a Purim costume quite a few years ago, but it still looks good, so I though I’d share it with you again. And this shabbat is shabbat shira in which we celebrate the birds, so the timing seems right!

If you’d like to crochet a hat for an eagle costume, which I’m actually lending to a girl neighbor this year, check out my post and get crocheting, Purim is just around the corner! And of course, this beanie was worn together with a crocheted costume cape, so check that out as well.

Keep on readin’ for tips for making this fun hat!

I’m sorry dear readers, but I really don’t have the time to write you a pattern, but I’ll give you basic instructions so that you can easily duplicate my design. DO examine my photo carefully and copy the proportions of the features for the best results. Eyes need to be close together or they end up looking quite silly as I found out as I was experimenting with the proportions.

How To:

  1. Crochet a basic beanie in the size and color that works for you, edge the beanie with a picot stitch
  2. Crochet two eyes as shown with black shaft buttons as the center
  3. Add eyelashes to the eyes as follows: attach yarn and chain 5, *slip stitch back down the chain to form the first lash. Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches (on the last row of the eye) and then chain 5. Continue around from * making seven eyelashes.
  4. Crochet a triangle for the beak
  5. Crochet six loops at the top of the hat, all beginning at the center of the hat. I used two colors of yarn and varied the sizes of the loops
  6. Sew the eyes and nose to the hat, and that is it!
