Crocheted Sunburst Granny Square Wrist Warmers Free Pattern
Chunky crocheted wrist warmers are so fun to whip up and make a great winter accessory that will take you into early spring as well. And once you get the idea behind the construction of these crocheted sunburst granny square wrist warmers, you can go to town and make crocheted wrist warmers from all those fun granny square patterns you’ve been wanting to try out! And of course, since guage isn’t really all that important since this is one size fits all teens/adults, you can go ahead and use the yarn of your choice and just crochet some extra rounds to make your project large enough. Of course, I’ll indicate in the pattern where those extra rounds should be inserted, so enjoy this fun pattern, and please send me photos of your version!
So far I have crocheted the version you see here, with a beige background, as well as a previous version HERE, with a grey background. Now I think I need a neck warmer to match, right? Okay, but first the wrist warmers…….
Crocheted Sunburst Granny Square Wrist Warmers Pattern
Hook: 6.5mm, US K
Yarn: Chunky: 80%acrylic 20% polyamide, 100g/110meters
Yarn Colors: Beige, rose pink and grey, used as desired
To Start:
Round 1-4: Crochet a sunburst granny square according to sunburst granny square pattern, do not detach yarn on last round
Round 5: Ch2 and hdc around square, slip stitch to first hdc. Corners should be 3hdc, ch3, 3hdc. Thumb hole is made by (ch5 and skipping 5 stitches). Placement of thumb hole may vary according to the size of your granny square, so wrap square around hand to determine correct spot.
Note: For my square, as you can see below, the hole was not vertically centered, but rather in the spot exactly over 3dcs and 2hdcs from the previous row. The square shown here is for the right hand wrist warmer. Since hole is not in the middle vertically hole for left wrist warmer will be worked on the right hand side of the square, where as here for right hand wrist warmer thumb hole is worked on left hand size of square.
Round 6: ch1 sc around. 3 sc in each corner. Do not break off yarn.
Note: If you do not plan on crocheting thumb covers, you can simply sc into 5sc thumb hole. If however you would like to possibly crochet a thumb, sc into ch5 so that you can go back and crochet the thumb if desired. I did not so that, so adding a thumb on the two pairs I’ve made would be a bit messy at this point.
Note: If you are using smaller hook and different yarn weight, you may need to crochet a few more rounds of sc to make square big enough to wrap around hand.
Round 7: Fold square in half with right sides facing each other, and make a seam by crocheting the two sides together with sc in back loop only. Ideally, at this point one should not have to break off yarn to continue with round 8, but there are a number of factors involved, so if you’d like, figure this out, otherwise just see where you end up and if you find yourself at the cuff area, so don’t detach yarn, since that round is next. (Okay, no sighing here please, life is busy and if I took the time to figure this one out in the pattern, honestly I’d sell the pattern, so just smile! We are only talking about the need to weave in a extra end or two…..)
Round 8: Starting right after seam, shell stitch around as follows: in same stitch *(sc, hcd, dc hdc, sc) skip 2 stitches and repeat * Join to first sc with a slip stitch and detach yarn. If you’d like to make wrist warmers longer, add extra rows of hdc around cuff, and then finish off with row of shell stitch when desired length is reached.
Round 9: In contrasting color attach yarn at seam, and slip atitch around top of hand warmer to create nice border. Join to first stitch with slip stitch.
Note: If you need to make hand warmers longer, add extra rows of sc or hdc here, and then finish with a round of slip stitch.
Here is the back view of the wrist warmers for your reference, but really don’t worry, as long as they fit, you’re good!
