Accordian Folded Paper Leaves

Paper-leaves-succah-decoration

With Rosh HaShana now under our belts, it is time to think about Succah decorations, and this year I think I’m going to make  a large number of accordion folded paper leaves for some artful vines to cover the Succah walls. Well that is one of my plans at the moment, but don’t hold your breath as that could change between now and the time that I actually start the heavy duty crafting! Nonetheless, these golden leaves are simple to make, and can be made any size you desire (meaning large, folks!) and have a very sculptural modern look to them. I’m dreaming of lots of vines running up the walls of my Succah using these paper folded leaves and wire or possibly rope as the stem. Hmmmm, hot glueing the leaves to rope is a possibility, and if the rope happens to be more like wire, that would be perfect. But first things first, lets learn how to make these leaves!

Folded-paper-leafYou’ll Need:

  • metallic gold card stock weight (at least) paper
  • a bone folder (optional but helpful)
  • doublestick tape or hot glue, or possible a stapler might work

How To:

  1. Each leaf is made from a triangular piece of paper. Experiment with scrap paper to determine the size and proportion of the triangles you’ll want to use, given the results after folding your test pieces.
  2. Place triangle on table with the longest side at the bottom and the point at the top, if that makes sense?
  3. Start folding your triangle accordion style, from the bottom to the top.
  4. Now, fold completely folded piece in half down the middle such that the first edge that was folded now becomes the middle of the leaf.
  5. Adhere the two middle pieces together with hot glue or double sided tape, and voila a leaf is born!
  6. Once you have several triangle templates to use to create your leaves, cut triangles from your gold paper and get crafting!

Really lovely and so simple! A great idea for crafting in a pinch as well, so wether or not you use this for your succah, keep it in mind for just about any occasion! That is it for my first Succah craft of the year, and as always you can find many many more ideas in the archives!
