Spending time with your kids is essential for their intellectual and emotional growth. You can spend quality time together by playing your kid’s favorite sport or any activity that allows engagement between parent and child. Bonding time can and should include teaching your children something that you love to do such as painting, gardening, crafting or sewing, just to name a few. Stargazing could also be on that list!  I love creative activities that all build small motor coordination as well as skills that are useful in life in general, and one of those is surely sewing! With that in mind, why not introduce your kids to sewing, and at the very least when a button becomes loose they’ll have the confidence to sew it back on!

To get you started, here are some simple sewing project ideas to do at home with your kids or of course a few of the cuties in the neighborhood or who have a special place in your heart. I’m always encouraging giving back through crafting, right?

Puppet socks

Puppets created from socks are simple to make and a great way to build hand sewing skills. A basic puppet is made by sewing buttons on an old sock to serve as your puppet’s eyes. One can add a tongue with a piece of felt to make a snake, or add a crown or yarn hair. If you are using a plain sock, you can even paint the puppet’s face. One can of course also use fabric glue to attach any number of details to turn a basic sock into something interesting. Provide a bunch of socks so that kids can get those creative gears turning.

Boo-boo bags

A hot or cold compress filled with rice and called a “boo-boo bag” is useful for minor injuries such as light bumps and bruises. For this project a sewing machine is recommended as seams need to be perfect in order to hold the rice. Using a serger machine so that the seams on your boo-boo bag will have the capability to stretch out is recommended; https://www.stitchandsew.net/best-serger-reviews/ provides a comparison between a serger machine versus a typical sewing machine, along with a review of the best serger machines on the market. Your child can learn how to use the serger machine with your help, and this is an amazing confidence builder.

Doll skirts

If you have several small pieces of fabric, then you and your child can put it to good use by sewing a doll skirt. You might also need a bit of elastic for the waist. You can help your child sew by hand or you can use a sewing machine for this one and the outcome will be great either way.

Easy pillows

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a personalized throw pillow for each member of your family? What is best about this is that you and your child can easily make it together and your “pillows” can be shaped like animals or hearts or even stars, making them even more fun and interesting to create. One can use pre-cut fabric squares made for pillows or you can even use bandanas, old sweaters, sweatshirts, t-shirts or any woven fabric for this project.

Drawstring backpack

A simple drawstring backpack made by attaching straps to a drawstring bag can be a great sewing project for you and your child. Regardless of whether your child is a boy or a girl, a backpack made according to the desires of your child can be useful and fun. Add ears, appliqué, patches and charms for an over the top result, and this item will get lots of use for swimming dates, sleepovers and more.

Do make quality time with your children a priority, regardless of the activity you choose to do. The most important thing is to shut off all cell phones and really spend time talking with one another without distraction. Focus on your time together and the rewards are truly priceless. And if you choose to go the creative route (my pick of course) you may just discover hidden talents that are well worth developing, truly a win win!
