A Fun Stand-Up Painted Owl With Wine Cork Feet!

Stand-up-owl-painting-with-cork-feetOwl crafts are really so much fun and lend themselves to lots of creativity, as once you have the basic identifying features of an owl, namely the eyes and beak and compact body shape, you can do just about anything and it will still look like an owl! Recently I have been enjoying honing my art skills and bringing them into the world of craft by marrying the two through artful recycled packaging, birthday decor, succah decor and now a little bit of fall/winter seasonal decor that includes owls. It is true, a pink and green owl with striped pants might be most of all birthday party appropriate, but I say one does not need any excuses whatsoever to bring something colorful and creative into your home any time! This stand up owl is so simple to make and will surely bring smiles all around, so lets get started!

You’ll Need:

  • heavy card stock, watercolor paper or cereal box cardboard, around 8″ x 8″, not bigger or wine corks won’t hold up the owl
  • acrylic paint
  • a white paint pen and a black sharpie medium tip
  • toothpicks
  • wine corks
  • hot glue

How To:

Paint yourself a cute or artful owl, or simply draw one with a marker. If you’d like to paint one like this, basically you start by drawing just a very rough owl shape, then you playfully fill the shape with brush strokes in different colors to designate the wings and belly and beak. Paint circles for the eyes and set aside to dry. Then come in with a black marker and a white paint marker to add the details which define the owl. You then may want to pass over the piece with just a few more brush strokes here and there and then set aside to dry. Once dry cut out the shape, cut a wine cork in half, stick a toothpick into the center of each cork half, and hot glue the toothpicks to the back side of the little legs. That is it, now go make a whole bunch of fun stand up animals, or just explore a million ways to paint an owl!
