Folk Art Trees In Bloom Doodle Painting

Folk-art-trees-in-bloom-doodle-paintingLooking for a fun tree doodle, that is simple with great results, and that you could even use as a Tu B’Shevat craft? These folk art doodle trees are sweet as can be, and look great as is, on paper, but one could also draw them on cereal box cardboard and use them for a garland or napkin rings, or how about a grove of stand up folk art doodle trees? This was a first for me, and I have to admit, the last time I tried to doodle trees in my sketchbook, sometime last May, I failed completely, but I just had to get back up on the horse, and this time, yippee, I’ve already filled six pages in my sketchbook with doodle trees and I am thrilled! And after all the acrylic paintings I’ve been doing in the same sketchbook, I need to do a whole bunch of pages that aren’t so paint laden, and this is a good start! I have actually taken photos of these doodles in progress in order to do a small tutorial, so lets get started!

You’ll Need:

  • acrylic paint
  • a black permanent marker
  • a white paint pen, fine nib, mine is Posca .7mm
  • a pink paint pen, medium nib, mine is Posca Pink13 1.8-2.5mm

How To:

  1. Using a neutral golden/green  color and a dirty paint brush cover your page with wide brush strokes, and set aside to dry.
  2. Now draw your folk art doodle trees with a black permanent medium marker, (I used a black brush marker) using the above photo for reference.
  3. Now paint the background in light blue (or the color of your choice) and don’t do a neat/perfect job, you want some of the background to show through around the trees!
  4. Once background is dry, go over any black areas that may need redrawing.
  5. And now for the fun part, add details with white paint pen, and at the very end add some tiny dots of pink to indicate blossoms. In the photo below you can see the difference between the trees before I added the white pen (bottom row) and after.

Hope you enjoy this one, and that you will experience the “magic’ of using a white paint pen for small details! Enjoy!

Folk-art-trees-doodle-how-to-detailFun right? And as you can see, it does not pay to spend time trying to be perfect, as we want things to be a little bit imperfect so that it has that painterly charm!

Doodle-trees-painting-sketchbookI hope you’ll use this little tutorial to go beyond the trees I’ve created and make some that are your very own, go for it!
