Today, Shabbat was actually the 17th of Tammuz, a fast day on the Jewish calendar, but since minor fasts never occur on Shabbat, the fast and mourning are pushed off until Sunday. The 17th of Tammuz is the day that marks the beginning of “The Three Weeks” a period of mourning leading up to Tisha B’Av.
