Giant Watercolor Lollipop Costume Prop Or Party Centerpiece
Need a giant lollipop for a costume or maybe a whole bunch to use as centerpieces for a birthday party or even a bat mitzvah? I just made this one for my daughter to use as a prop in a play that was part of her graduation from 8th grade ceremony, and it looks even better from far away! It is true, the results are not what I'd call "perfect" but with all the perfect looking crafts being churned out these days courtesy of cutting machines and ready-cut everything, I'd say it is time to get a little bit imperfect, now and then. Ready to make some giant lollipops? Lets get started!
You'll Need:
- white foam core, mine is around 1/4" (for my readers in Israel, this is called "kappa")
- white card stock
- a craft knife
- a dinner sized plate
- watercolors
- white acrylic craft paint
- a bamboo skewer, or wooden dowel
- hot glue gun
How To:
- Place a dinner sized ceramic plate onto foam core, and using a craft knife, cut around it. Cutting foam core on an angle can be tricky, but the most important thing is to have a sharp blade, ortherwise the foam tends to ball up and the paper edges tear…..you'll know if this happens to you, but don't worry about it too much as we'll cover that up in any case.
- With a pencil, draw the spiral lollipop, which has five colors on to one foam core circle.
- Hot glue the two circles together with the skewer sandwiched in between.
- Cut several long strips of white cardstock that are the width of the lollipop edge, roughly 1/2", but measure to save having to trim it later.
- If the edges of your round foam core pieces are perfect, you can attach these strips to the thickness of the lollipop using something like double stick tape, but if not, or if the two circles don't exactly match up (like mine) you will have to use hot glue.
- Now. so that the front and back of the lollipop will match, continue your lollipop sketch down the sides and then on to the other side. You can draw the spiral first, just the division of the spiral into sections should be done in accordance with the sections on the edge, so that it matches. Just look at my photo if that doesn't make sense.
- Now it is time to get painting! Using five colors, or more if you like, paint your lollipop.
- Whoops almost forgot, the skewer really should be painted white, but I didn't have any white paint on hand. You can paint the stick now or before you get started.
And that is it! Now make one, a bunch in different sizes, or make a bunch all in one size (they'd look great lined up in a rectangular flower box as a backdrop for a dessert table, right?) Whatever you do, the results will be cute as can be! Enjoy!
