Monogram Engagement Cookies With Printable Icing Sheets

Printable-icing-sheet-monogram-cookieBaking is now my teenage daughter’s department, and she is doing a great job at it, sometimes too great in fact as I’m trying to avoid sugar. These monogram engagement cookies could be posted as a craft fail, but rather than be that harsh lets just say we (she, rather) learned a big lesson with this one: don’t try out something new when under pressure! Our neighbor’s daughter got engaged and my daughter wanted to help make some deserts for the desert bar, fair enough. However, her schedule was packed and she had to make the deserts ahead of time as she would be away on a school trip the day of the party. She planned to make royal icing cookies with an edible printable monogram made with edible printable icing, and enlisted me to do the graphics. So far so good……despite being rushed with shopping for her trip, she printed the icing sheet at a store in town. Then she pastuerized the eggs for the royal icing, and at this point it was already at least midnight, sigh. (On top of that we had some guests that were supposed to come on July 16/17 and showed up on July 14, so we quickly had to clean the apartment where they would be staying, while they sat and waited, not a great situation, especially with cookies waiting to be made!)

If you are reading this, lets just go to the next page for the end of the story, shall we?

Printable-icing-sheet-monogram-cookieAh, there you are! So, we learned that edible icing sheets should be placed on wet royal icing, though other than that my daughter did not think to ask the folks in the store how to remove the plastic backing. I read that one should put it in the freezer for 1 minute, but I believe she left it in the freezer for too long, or maybe these sheets don’t perform in that way. In any case, it waw now 1am and the plastic backing would not budge without destroying the graphics, do rather than ditching the whole project, my daughter put the edible sheets on with the plastic, meaning they were not longer edible. I’m proud of her for just going with the situation and realizing that if anyone took a bite they’d remove the plastic.

I did go to the engagement party, and the cookies looked great used directly on the table as a decoration, and people understood that they were not exactly edible, which was actually good as it meant that they remained on the table for many hours into the celebration!

Now, with the few scraps left we’ll just have to figure out how to remove the icing from the plastic, as edible icing sheets are a great way to personalize even a store bought cake for a special event. You could even treat yourself to your own printer to use at home! i read that folks even go so far as to use a regular printer, but that requires changing the printing heads and making sure their printer is clean…..hmmmmm. Best bet is to find someone in your area who will print the sheets for you, or order them online, now you just have to hone your graphic design skills!
