The Motherland Monument In Kyiv, Ukraine

Motherland Monument Kyiv War MuseumDuring our short stay in Kiev, or Kyiv, Ukraine, one of my favorite locations was the site of the Motherland Monument, which is part of the World War 2 Museum, and overlooks the Dnieper River. The monument is stunning, and the view of Kiev and the river are lovely. Truly at the top of my personal list for must-sees in Kiev. We did not go into the museum, which is where you can go up into the statue, but I think that if I have the chance again, I would like to go into the museum as the Socialistic representation of the war, seen outside on the plaza via sculptures is so very interesting. In fact this Motherland monument is just one of a group of post war Socialistic monuments in Eastern Europe portraying the “mother” as the symbol of the country. More about the later, first come have a little glimpse of this special spot.

Ukraine Motherland StatueHere she is, I personally love dramatic statues like this one and so interested in their historic context. I can certainly see how a something like this evokes national pride, which was exactly the point.

Ukraine Motherland Monument and plaza KyivQuite tall and love the metal used, reminds me of some of the sculptures around Rockefeller Center in NYC. I believe the height at the tip of the sword is as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

Kyiv Plaza With View of Dnieper RiverA view of the Dnieper River, on which Kiev is built.

Kyiv WW 2 War Museum FountainA really dramatic war fountain. Would love to see it with water, I’m guessing that happens in the summer, this was the end of the winter.

WW 2 Museum Kyiv Tanks OutsideSome war tanks for kids to climb on. Of course we have plenty of these in Israel as well……
