Simple IKEA Hack: Ekby Valter Bracket Wall Sconce!
Hey there, the whole world has fun coming up with creative IKEA hacks, so I’m now joining the club. This first one I’m sharing is not my idea, so only taking credit for seeing the idea and actually following through, yippee! This idea is for those of us who would like a modern playful light on the wall but don’t have wiring in that spot, ta da, you do need an outlet though, hopefully not too far away. This Ikea hack uses one thing from Ikea, the Ekby Valter shelf bracket in the larger size, together with a simple bulb and cord that I bought at an Israeli lighting store. One can get a bit more complicated with this is you are so inclined by actually threading the cord through the hole, but for now I just wrapped mine around for the simplest solution. You’ll Need:
- Ikea ekby valter shelf bracket in black, larger of two sizes
- one black light socket with the longest chord possible, unless your outlet is right below the light
- an extension cord, possibly
- a nice round filament bulb, something a little bigger than standard looks great
- a drill and screws appropriate for your wall
How To:
The success of this project is based on the fact that all the elements except of course for the bulb are black. You can try it using whatever is available to you, but keeping everything either white or black pulls the whole look together. It is amazing how such a simple sconce is really all you need over a bed to bring that space up a notch design wise!
We simple wrapped the chord around the bracket as you can see, but if you is so inclined you can remove the plug from the chord, put it through the hole on the bracket and then reattach the plug. This will result in a cleaner look, but may or may not be necessary, you decide!
It is true, that chord running down the wall looks a wee bit sloppy, but that is also part of the look. One could use those little anchors to attach it to the wall, but then again, first live with it ilke this for a while, and then decide!
