How To Make Quick Birthday Cake Decorations

How-To-Make-Quick-Cake-DecorationsLet face it, life is busy and simple solutions to acknowledge family birthdays, or any special occasion, in a fun way are always great to have on hand. Personally, I’m not into spending hours and hours on a birthday cake that then gets eaten anyway, and over the years have mostly relied on simple decorations that can be made quickly and generally at the last minute…..so it goes around here! All you need are some basic drawing skills, a bit of an idea regarding scale and proportion, and very simple supplies. I have used this same technique over the years to make a Lochness Monster Cake, An Underwater Castle Cake, A Penguins Cake, A Merry-Go-Round Cake and many more, so use your imagination and just a tiny bit of time to make something adorable and memorable! Check out this round-up that includes all the cakes mentioned, plus a King Kong Manhattan cake, my favorite, right here.

You’ll Need:

  • colored card stock
  • a black permanent marker, medium sized nib
  • wooden skewers
  • toothpicks
  • some cute or colored washi tape or whatever you have on hand

How To:

Start with a large number or letter, that should be the center of attention. Then draw other items slightly smaller than the number, and some at least half the size of the number. Tape the skewers to the back of the cut out drawings, do a good job since it will be seen.

If you need a cake that will be seen from two sides you can make two-sided decorations by simply cutting doubles of each item and then sandwiching the skewer in between the two piece of paper. For this you’ll need a glue stick, double stick tape. If making ahead of time you can use regular glue.
