Drinking Straw Starburst Ornament

Drinking-straw-starburst-DIY

Let’s recycle all those plastic straws that we may be using (if not recycling, use what you may have on hand or buy paper ones, please!) and make some wonderful and festive decorations! I’ll be using straws to make a whole bunch of Hanukkah ornaments for a wall hanging, but of course this idea could be used for decorations for so many occasions. Best of all the drinking straw ornaments I’ve made for this Hanukkah are two sided, so in the future I can use them to hang in a doorway or as a mobile. You can find the link to the tutorial for making the drinking straw dreidel ornaments here.

Crafts made with plastic straws will last virtually forever (which is why we need to recycle them!) so decorations packed away nicely in a flat box can be used for years to come. I know, bright plastic straw DIY crafts may not be exactly suited to every area in your home, but I’m sure you can find a spot. I’ve hung the completed wall hanging in my kitchen on the side of a tall floor to ceiling cabinet, and it looks festive and fun. Okay, lets make a drinking star starburst ornament!

You’ll Need:

  • plastic or paper drinking straws
  • glue, high tack glue for plastic or low temp hot glue for plastic straws, white glue or hot glue for paper straws
  • thread and needle for hanging ornament

How To:

Please make sure that the glue you are using will hold the straws together, so do a test, let it dry overnight before wasting time on something that will not hold. This actually happened with me, as I tried regular high tack white craft glue, which ultimately did not hold. What glue to use can be a struggle and I’m no expert, so I don’t want to recommend something toxic and stinky if it is not necessary, though I did use E1000 glue, which is like gorilla glue……I’m thinking that maybe a silicone glue, or even silicone in a tube might be less toxic, and work well?

The size of this starburst ornament is based on using one full length straw for the middle, together with one straw cut in half for the cross-piece

  1. Start with the darker blue pieces, 4 straws total. Cut one straw in half, and cut pointed ends on one end of each half. Glue those two pieces to either side of the center of the uncut straw. Cut the other two straws in half, cut pointed ends and glue those in place as well.
  2. You will now need 4 light blue straws, cut in half and with pointed ends as well. Adhere with glue as well and set aside to dry.
