Giant DIY Accordian Fold Paper Flowers

DIY Paper Accordian Fold FlowerIf you ever need some great looking paper wall decorations, and you are just not sure what to make, give this giant accordian fold flower a try, and you’ll want to make enough to fill the entire wall. It is true, one can buy manufactured accordian fold flowers that are similar, but there is nothing quite like the look of something handmade, right? Plus you’ll be able to customize yours in so many ways depending on the paper you choose! And if you really want to get creative, how about taping together a bunch of magazine or catalog pages and using those? Or even paint or stamp patterns onto your paper before you create the giant flower. Okay, lets learn how to make this beauty, shall we?

You’ll Need:

  • a very  large sheet of paper that is the width of the desired width of your flower
  • a bone folder or ruler
  • a ruler and pencil, if you want to be exact, slightly recommended for thickish paper
  • a sharp-pointed yarn needle or mattress needle and strong thread
  • scissors

How To:

  1. Follow the tutorial from my previous post here.
  2. Do cut out a little triangular shape halfway between the middle and the end on each side for added lovliness, just make sure to measure the placement of the triangle exactly on each side so that they’ll meet up when you open the flower.
  3. In order to obtain best results I would take the time to measure and mark the placement of each fold. Try it without this step and you’ll end up with wonky edges that need trimming and a less than perfect result. I’ll admit I omitted this step, but I will not next time!
  4. Also, do note that when one cuts the petal shape a shorter piece of paper can achieve the same size as opposed to making an accordian fold medallion. Not sure if this makes sense, but basically cutting the petals releases the paper so it can stretch around more easily.

DIY Paper Accordian Fold FlowerHere is a little peak of how I actually used one of the accordian paper flowers I made for a Purim party earlier in the week. It was used as part of a little decorative scene that I made to cover some partitions on either side of the stage. You can see the giant paper peacock peaking out on the right, and that cute origami bird, I’ll be sharing that on early next week, in the meantime go make some fun flowers!
