DIY Cardboard Roosters Make Perfect Party Decor!

Recycled cardboard rooster craftI am reposting this DIY cardboard rooster craft because, well they are just too cute to sit in the archives, are relatively easy to make, and what could be more fun than a few giant roosters in your home just in time for Purim?

Ever thought about using some recycled cardboard to make some fun cardboard roosters? Truthfully, I hadn’t either, but after making a black rooster and a white rooster, well I just want to make some more. I made them to use as stage props in a school play, but they’d look great in a child’s room, or even in your kitchen, so have some fun and make a cardboard rooster, or two or three! Assuming you have a bit of paint on hand the rest of the supplies are basically free, so this is a budget friendly craft project as well……ah yes, and with the Jewish holiday of Purim coming in just a week, well filling the house with roosters and chickens could be quite festive, and certainly sure to bring a laugh. Okay, lets get started…….

Cardboard black rooster white roosterYou’ll Need:

  • corrugated cardboard boxes
  • black, white, red acrylic craft paint
  • white paper, and brown craft paper (optional)
  • white glue or decoupage medium (optional)
  • a pencil and eraser
  • good scissors

How To:

  1. Draw a rooster shape on a cardboard box and cut out. You can use this first rooster as a template to make as many as you like.
  2. Paint your rooster as seen here, leave the shape of the wing unpainted
  3. To make a stand for your rooster cut out a mound shape, paint and then decorate with Matisse-like cut paper folliage applied with decoupage medium.
  4. Using hot glue, affix rooster to mound. To get mound to stand up, either make a small cardboard easel for the back, or glue the mound to something with a bit of stability, like even a small brick or small box.
  5. Enjoy!

Cardboard rooster propsThere is something about the combo of black, white, red, and the brown of the cardboard that I just love.

Cardboard stand-up roosters
I just love the paper cut outs on the mounds, I did it without giving it too much thought, so I think that is reflected in the results, which aren’t forced. Lets here it for some cardboard roosters all around, shall we?
