A Fun Crochet Meets Plastic Basket For Spring

Crocheting On A Plastic BasketI just found this in my archives, and thought I’d post it again, as it is a great one! Any container with holes can be spiffied up with some t-shirt yarn and a crochet hook, so when you do your spring cleaning…….I just remembered I put something in the recycling pile that could be upcycled, good thing I’m taking my own advice! Enjoy!

Spring is here which means it is time to get started with the Spring/Pesach organizing and cleaning……but first of course as I was recovering from a very festive Purim I spied a cute little basket with holes in it, that could be much more useful if one could not see what is inside, for me the hoarder that is! So I present to you a quick crocheted spring basket using an existing plastic basket with holes, an idea that can be used on many types of plastic baskets!

And yes, to make this project “quick” one does need the proper supplies, namely yarn and hook sizes that are large, so keep on reading for those oh so important tips, since right about now time is of the essence…….well at least on my end!

Crocheting On Plastic Mesh Basket

A sweet plastic basket like this one can even be used in the bathroom or next to a sink, as it can certainly be easily washed and put in the sun to dry. It could be a great catch all for sponges or bottles of shampoo (which is what I’m thinking of for us) or hung on a hook somewhere to contain the little messes of ilfe. Hmmm, I’ve got a lot of little messes so I may just need a bunch more of these!

Crocheted Spring Basket Using Plastic Base

Oh and just by the way, if you ever find  yourself in Amsterdam, and having seen way too many of these wooden souvenir tulips, you opt not to buy any, well think again, because once you are home they make great little props (or decorations in a baby’s or little girl’s room) ! Just be sure to check around as the price of them varies greatly…….I wish I had more actually!

How To Crochet On A Plastic Basket

You’ll Need:

  • commercial or homemade t-shirt yarn
  • a size 10mm or smaller crochet hook (depending on the size of the holes)

How To:

  1. The only stitch one can use in a situation like this is the slip stitch, as there is no way to wrap the yarn around the hook. Yarn is placed on the inside of the basket, and hook is used the bring yarn to front, and to pull is through the loop on the hook. One needs to be careful with the tension, if your basket is floppy like mine.
  2. I crocheted three rows into each row of hearts, as the t-shirt yarn that I was using is on the thin side.
  3. When crocheting on a plastic base, it is much easier if the item is large enough to fit your hand into it, and the holes need to be large enough to fit the crochet hook into them.
  4. Experiment and you’ll see right away what is possible and what is not! And of course, this same stitch can actually be done as embroidery as a chain stitch, but for me that would take quite a bit longer.

Enjoy!
