Make Yarn From Plastic Bags To Use For Holiday Crafting!

Plastic Bag Yarn

Imagine my delight when my local grocery store temporarily switched from yellow plastic grocery bags to purple plastic grocery bags…….pure heaven as it were for a dedicated recycling crafter like me, right? I was actually swooning I believe, or maybe that was on account of the mesh potato sacks that instead of their standard white became orange, right around the same time!

Plastic Bag Yarn For Pom Poms

If you live in an area where plastic bags do exist (unlike many of my readers from California) and if you have not made plarn, namely plastic bag yarn, then you are surely missing out, as it is so much fun!

One of my favorite things to do with plastic bag yarn is to make plastic bag pom poms to use as gift toppers and so much more. They really are fantastic!

And once upon a time I also crocheted with plastic bags (below) which was also so much fun! I've got to get back to some more plastic bag crocheting, maybe with these purple balls…….

Ah yes, and I completely forgot about this crocheted plastic bag doily clock, whaddya know?

So dear readers, take a look at my how to make plastic bag yarn tutorial, collect your bags in a variety of fun colors and get to work. Come to think of it, the kids could use the balls for finger knitting possibly or even weaving!

Totally with you. I once changed my shopping loyalty, just to get the right shade for a project. They’ve brought in a 5p charge for plastic bags in the UK, so I probably will be doing less projects with plarn. I’m now more likely to remember my fabric bags when I shop, rather than asking for a plastic bag, which is good really.

I have also been thinking of knitting with plastic yarn. But will the new 5p charge put me off. I do approve of the charge though, as it does really make you remember to take your own bag.

The laws are great, as long as there is education as well! And even so, unless bags are outlawed as they are in certain parts of California, there are still tons of them around, so best to use them up with crafting!

Can totally relate! Of course even with that charge what percentage of people really bring their own bags? I guess many might at least re-use the ones they have.
