Origami Heart That Is Simple For Kids Too!
It is true, we do not celebrate Valentines Day, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy making some heart themed crafts to spread the love, and origami hearts seem truly perfect right about now! And the good news is that kids around 8 years old and up can make these origami hearts after some explanation from an adult. Most of the hearts you see here were actually made by my ten year old son, who once he got the hang of folding squares made from A4 paper, said "lets make a bunch." And that is coming from someone who knows nothing about the upcoming heart holiday, and is not seeing all the images for said holday on the interenet like his blogging mom!
Another interesting point, is that my boys do not immediately label pastels or pinks as being feminine colors and thus off limits for them…..okay an entirely pink bedroom, yes, but some pink within a pattern, or pink paper, no problem. I am certainly very happy about this, as pink is a lovely color, and thinking that it may be the result of going to an all boys school and having only one sister. Or maybe it is a product of not being exposed to TV advertisements that show little girls with pink stuff, and certainly not doing a lot of shopping in major stores and shopping centers. So dear readers, if you want your boys to enjoy pink, basically don't expose them to all the consumer oriented messages that proclaim "pink is for girls." Good luck on that one.
You'll Need:
- colored paper, origami or any lightweight paper
- a ruler and a craft knife or for less exact results, scissors

Note: We actually used card stock which works, but becomes thick and the folds tend to split when creased. On the other hand, with card stock the results are very solid and great for mobiles etc. Additionally, we actually made our squares from A4 paper using the fold, crease and tear method, which works well with thick paper, and is always a good trick to teach your kids!
How To:
- For large hearts, make a square from an A4/letter sized sheet of colored paper. For small hearts, make a square from 1/2 a sheet of A4/letter sized paper. Make sure to save your scraps, you'll need them for the project we'll share soon that uses these hearts!
- Follow the simple video, made by a kid, or at least demonstrated by a kid, listed above.
- Adults may want to watch the video, learn how to fold the heart, and then teach it to kids rather than having them watch the video. It is certainly preferable to try and take all creative exercises away from the computer environment to avoid distraction and to open the creative channels!
