DIY Ceramic Wall Clock

A DIY ceramic wall clock is a wonderful thing to make if you happen to have some time in a ceramic's studio, or have access to a kiln! My twelve year old son made this one, and we can't wait to hang it in our kitchen. And in fact he has already made another one for his room that has yet to be painted, but will hopefully be even more fabulous! And of course I want to make one too, though i should probably finish my series of hanging planters first! My son and I are having such a wonderful time together at our weekly ceramics studio time (just about one and a half hours) and since he is growing up altogehter too quickly, this is really something that we will always cherish. Not to mention that our house will be filled with sweet reminders!

You'll Need:

• clay, ours fires white and requires a kiln
• number cookie cutters
• various items to make texture
• a clock movement
• glazes or paints
• strong hook with appropriate glue

How To:

1. Roll out a slab of clay that is the desired thickness, and using a large round plate or bowl as a guide, cut out the clock shape.
2. Carefully find center and make a hole in the middle for the clock movement, and make small marks on the perimeter in order for accurate placement of numbers. (I don't think my son did this, but it is a good idea!)
3. Use number cookie cutters to create numbers, and apply other designs and texture with stencils, and assorted findings
4. Smooth outer edges with a dampened sponge and set aside to dry and be fired.
5. After initial firing, piece is painted, set aside to dry and then dipped in a clear gloss glaze (by the studio owner) before firing a second time.
6. Install clock movement and attach hook, and hang!

Note: Make sure the clay slab isn't too thick for your clock movement, this can be a problem!
