Tips for Making T-Shirt Yarn:

  • A child sized, or even adult sized t-shirt really does not yield a great quantity of yarn, so to make something other than a coaster or pot holder, you'll need a lot of shirts!
  • Do spend a bit of time figuring out the right width for your purposes, and do take into account the weight of the fabric when deciding the width. Namely if you want to use a bunch of yarn from different shirts together in one project, you'll want the weight to be similar. Meaning that thinner weight fabrics will need to be cut wider.
  • Make sure you have a good pair of scissors, and try to make your yarn with as few joins as possible…..namely a long strip where possible (there are several ways to do this)
  • Let your friends know that you're collecting old t-shirts, that should help your stash get bigger in no time!
