Square Wreath With Felt Flowers Is Sweet Anytime!

Square Wreath With Felt Flowers

The Jewish holiday of Shavuout starts tonight, and our door is decorated with this sweet little square wreath adorned with felt flowers! (A little disclaimer: door wreaths are decidedly un-Jewish if you delve into their origin, and I generally try not to use the word wreath, but for the sake of folks finding this post, well I just couldn't think of another word that would suffice.) Round floral wreaths are a symbol of military funerals and memorial day, so I went with a fun variation of a square wreath which actually reminds me of a trellis, perfect!

This project came about as I had a bunch of felt chrysanthemum flowers left over from my felt flower napkin ring project, and I have to say, I just love it! Change out the little banner (which reads chag sa-may-ach, with a gutteral ch that is, translated happy holiday) and this project could be perfect for so many occasions, or just as sweet as can be in a baby's room. Ready to whip up one of these square wreaths, using supplies that you likely have on hand (assuming you have a big bag of felt that needs using up, like I did, did, being the operative word, yippee!) let's get started.

Felt flowers on a frame from back

You'll Need:

  • felt, use us what you have on hand like i did…..such a great feeling
  • wooden skewers
  • hot glue
  • t-shirt yarn
  • felt chrysanthemum flower tutorial
  • white or creme paper and a black marker

How To:

  1. Make frame using skewers and hot glue, check out photo below, to see the construction. I needed something long to fit my door, you might need something more square, so adapt the design as needed.
  2. Work in arranging the flowers in a pleasing asymmetrical way, and then affix with hot glue. Flowers might be much wider than frame, so reinforce from back with extra pieces of felt, see photo below.
  3. Add leaves, and I think in this case small ones are the most pleasing to the eye.
  4. Make some little buds by simply tying a knot in a piece of t-shirt yarn, and then tying another knot. Perfect, and something I've never seen elsewhere. Alternately you could make little buds by rolling some ribbon or felt, or even using some largish beads.
  5. Make the banner, yes hand draw it, you can do it…….the imperfect look works really well here, in my humble opinion!
  6. Enjoy and let me know how it goes!
