The Seventeenth Of Tammuz And The Hurva Synagogue

    July 11, 2017 /

Today is the Seventeenth of Tammuz, a solemn sun-up to sun-down fast day, which markis the beginning of the mourning period on the Jewish calendar known as "The Three Weeks." Why three weeks you ask? Well, there are three weeks until the most solemn day on the calendar, T'Isha B'Av (the ninth day of the month of Av) the day on which the Holy Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, and today marks the day, among other things, that the walls to the city were breached, sigh. Something that you may find interesting about the Jewish calendar is that it is cyclical like any calendar, and yet the hebrew dates themselves…

Pencil Drawing Exercises To Teach Light, Shadow And Volume

    July 10, 2017 /

Aren't these pencil drawing exercises that my fourteen year old daughter drew just wonderful? Sometimes one forgets the magic of simply putting pencil to paper, especially if one learns some oh so important lessons in how to actually depict light, shadow and volume! Of course there are those artistic geniuses out there that just naturally understand these kinds of things, but most of us benefit greatly from art lessons, and specifically in this case drawing lessons that give one the tools to really create something special. And yes, we do realize that the fruit look rather mechanical, but that was in fact the point in order to really drive home…

    Welcome To Craft Schooling Sunday!

    July 8, 2017 /

Welcome to Craft Schooling Sunday, one of the best parties around thanks to the amazing contributions from so many lovely readers! Summer is in full swing, which means that shortly this lovely party will be taking a little vacation as I travel to meet up with family across the ocean, yippee! I can't believe a whole year has gone by since our last trip, and I haven't even finished sharing all the photos yet, so I guess I'd better get to that! I'm at a bit of a loss for words at the moment, so I'll just say thanks for joining me here, and now for the…

Remembering Jerusalem: Crafts For The Three Weeks

    July 6, 2017 /

The period of mourning for Jerusalem that is referred to as "The Three Weeks" on the Jewish calendar is coming next week, so lets add some meaning to this important time with some creative crafts! For those of us who live in Israel, and for whom the idea of Jerusalem is real, the crafts are a great reminder that while it is summer vacation (my boys are actually still in school until the end of this three week period) and a time to unwind from the pressures of the school year, we mustn't forget that it still a time for reflection. For those living outside of Israel, I'd say filling…

Crocheted Stool Cover: A Reader’s Version

    July 5, 2017 /

Summer is a great time to whip up some fun crocheted accessories for your home, and one of my favorites is the crocheted stool cover. Crocheted stool covers are relatively quick and make such a wonderful statement in you home or on the patio.I actually came across this version by patinamoon.com of my doily stool cover while doing a search for some more ideas, and I just love it! So great to see others using my patterns! One can crochet stool covers using industrial t-shirt yarn, like these t-shirt yarn stool covers I shared previously, or one can use just about any yarn that you have on hand, you decide!…
