Rosh HaShana Kid’s Card Craft: A Stuffed Fish!

Rosh HaShana is Wednesday night, so there is no time like the present to make fun cards for the new year and to keep the kids busy with crafts while you prepare for the holiday! If you are not a mom, so you may have even more time for crafting, and this little craft is fun for adults too……your fish may just look a bit more grown up, or maybe less detailed….you decide!

The tradition of giving cards for Rosh HaShana, to wish others a sweet new year (for starters) is a wonderful one, though we can certainly think a bit outside the box and make cards that are not actually cards, but in this case little stuffed shapes! And if you really want to take this craft one step further, include some little loops of ribbon for hanging before stapling it all together, and then these Rosh HaShana cards can become sukkah decorations as well, yippee!

Fish are simple to make as stuffed shapes, but anything can me made in this fashion, really. How about stuffed apples, a stuffed jar of honey, or even a heart?

You’ll Need:

• metallic silver cardstock/paper
• colored cardstock
• newspaper or plastic bags for stuffing
• a permanent marker (for writing on shiny cardstock)
• a stapler
• ribbon or yarn to make loop for hanging

How To:

1. Fold paper in half, and working on the back side of the paper, draw a fish shape that you like.
2. Cut out the fish, cutting through two layers of paper, resulting in two fish.
3. Working on the metallic side, write the message on one fish, and draw fish details on the other fish
4. Make a sandwich with the fish and staple roughly 2/3 of the way around the perimeter.
5. If you’d like the option of making this into a succah decoration, or so that it can be hung, include a loop of ribbon sticking out from the top
6. Stuff fish with tiny balls of newspaper or plastic bags, and then close opening.
7. Give to family, friends and neighbors, and make them smile!
