Simple Crocheted Flower Pattern Using The Popcorn Stitch
The almond trees are now in bloom here in Northern Isreal, so it is a great time to whip up some simple little crocheted flowers that can be used in so many ways for spring crafting. Now let me tell you, this little 2 row flower is no ordinary crocheted flower as it is puffy, on account of the popcorn stitch which is used to form the petals, and since I used chunky yarn, these little guys have a depth of around 1/2″, which means they make perfect appliques for all kinds of decorative accessories such as pillows, wall hangings, garlands, you name it!
Looking for a stash buster project, this just may be it! These little puffy flowers work up quickly, and of course are a great take-along project. So grab all those little left overs and be sure to put a hook and some small balls of yarn in your bag for using up all those spare moments here and there! Speaking from experience I’d say with these flowers the more the merrier and come to think of it they would look fantastic randomly placed across a coverlet or bedspread, with some areas tightly packed and some with lots of space around them. Sounds dreamy, so lets get started!
You can of course make these flowers all in one color, and this pattern would be perfect for making red poppies with black centers, oh my, I must get some red yarn to proove that to you! Any excuse to buy more yarn, right?
Whether you prefer lining things up or a more random scattered look, these flowers fit the bill. I’m actually using them lined up for some pillow covers and more scattered for a wall hanging, two fun projects I hope to share soon.
Crocheted Popcorn Stitch Two Row Flower Pattern
Gauge is not important, but hook size and yarn choice are: i used chunky yarn and a 5mm hook, namely use a smaller hook than you normally would to give your flowers more substance. Crochet a few flowers using different sized hooks and see which one you prefer, though I’d recommend going with just about the smallest hook you can comfortably use with your yarn.
Popcorn Stitch: Made of 5 DCs crocheted into same stitch. Crochet each DC and complete stitch, after 5th stitch is complete, remove hook from loop, place hook through the first DC in the group (from front to back) and then though the loop, yarn over and pull yarn through the loops, and that is it! So simple.
To start make a magic circle (my preference) or ch4 and join with a slip stitch.
Round 1: With color A: ch 4 (dc plus ch1) dc into circle, ch 1, repeat from 6 more times and join to 3rd chain of initial ch4 with a slip stitch. Detach yarn.
Round 2: With color B: Attach yarn into top of any DC, and ch4. Working in next ch1 space *make a popcorn stitch, ch1. DC into top of next DC, ch1 continue around until you have made 8 popcorn stitch petals. Slip stitch to 3rd chain in intial ch4, and detach yarn.
