Embroidering With T-Shirt Yarn!

Embroidery-with-t-shirt-yarnEver thought about embroidering with t-shirt yarn? I am always looking for ways to do intricate yet lovely crafts in a quicker way, so embroidery with t-shirt yarn is certainly one way to do that, right? With ethnic wall hangings and baskets still popular in the home decor arena, now is the perfect time to make some fun summer accessories for your home, with some t-shirt yarn and some woven placemats or baskets. I actually made the example here as a wall hanging, though it has not yet made it to the wall, it is propped up on a bedside table under a window for now, and maybe forever until I make something new! Okay, ready for a few tips to get those creative gears turning? Read on……

T-shirt-yarn-embroidery-on-round-placematYou’ll Need:

  • industrial t-shirt yarn
  • a needle with an eye large enough to accomodate your t-shirt yarn, get sharp tipped ones for adult use, blunt ones for kid use
  • a woven straw placemat, this one is from Ikea
  • some scissors

How To:

Not much explaining necessary here, I used the chain stitch (peach colored yarn) and the running stitch (grey yarn) for all the embroidery. You could use one placemat to experiment to see what works for you. The chain stitch is an easy way to make a row with a bit more bulk, rather than two rows of running stitch, plus I like how it looks. The ladder pattern was made with two rows of running stitch and then a row inbetween of the stitches running the other way to look like rungs of a ladder.

The fringe was made by inserting the yarn into the edge, forming a loop and pulling the two ends through the loop. I did this with the yarn in a needle.I made a bit of a mistake when I trimmed the fringe and cut some too short, avoid this mistake by placing a masking tape around the fringe to mark off the length before cutting. Better luck to me next time!

Have fun with this one, and I’d love to see your results!
