Have you been invited to a birthday party for a friends’ child? If so you may be wondering what present to bring? I love to give something handmade together with a purchased item to make it as personal as can be, and since I have kids of all ages in my life choosing something everyone will enjoy is part of the fun. If you are facing difficulties however, not to worry, I’m sharing some ideas here to help you out!

And just by the way, if there are siblings in the picture you might like to remember them as well with some small prizes or a small gift to avoid anyone feeling left out. Gift bags filled with an assortment of inexpensive prizes from the dollar store are a budget friendly and fun way to go. I just did that for a four year old and she was so excited she insisted on going to sleep with all the prizes beside her. She didn’t even notice what her seven year old brother received!

The choice of a present depends mostly on the age of a child for whom it is intended. So I’m sharing the below tips according to age:

Newborns: If you are going to a baby shower or a party devoted to the birth of a child, it is nice to present something useful to parents in this new period of adaptation. Newborn cute outfits for girls or boys are always helpful and can be adorable. Unless the child is truly a premie, is is best to purchase clothing sized 0-3 months or even better 3-6. Often newborn sized clothes remain unworn as children grow up too fast in the first months. So with that in mind purchase accordingly, and even buy a size to wear next year! (That is generally what I opt for.)

Another option for newborns is baby care items though steer clear of things that may pose allergy problems unless you know the parents well.  A gift card from a shop that has an online ordering and free of charge delivery would likely be very appreciated as well. Parents of newborns are often very busy and sleep deprived so keep that in mind. Why not buy a gift for mom or mom and dad? Some great coffee might do the trick!

Up to 6 months: This is the age of active growth and development. Thus, you might want to purchase one of the numerous toys that are fun to look at and aid in development. The choice is abundant so enjoy. Toys that have batteries are not recommended for children in this age category for safety reasons. They are generally recommended for kids over 12-18 months.

From 12 to 24 months: At this age a child begins to learn about the world around them, thus, toys and equipment for active pastimes are the perfect gift. For instance, a ball, or even better, ride-on or pushing toys can be perfect. Toys that encourage activity will help motivate a child to learn new moves and improve their capabilities, and toys that get everyone outside are a plus.

Up to three years: At this stage children actively learn to talk, and their play becomes more social. Thus, toys that can be used in role playing are always wonderful. For instance, a set of medical instruments or toys for a supermarket can be a nice gift for a curious toddler. Alternatively, diverse puzzles and books can become captivating for kids of this age. Check out the age recommendation on any toy you may purchase, as of course generally something meant for an 8 year old may not be appropriate for a three year old, unless of course the recipient is a little genius?

One additional possibility is to directly ask the parents what kind of gift their child might like, or what kind of things does their child love? Don’t worry, this is certainly not a faux pas, they’ll likely be happy that you cared enough to ask.

And last of all, bring a heart full of love and a big smile to the party, and that can be the greatest gift of all. If you are like me, and the party is a few hours drive away, bring along some yarn and a crochet hook and whip up some baby booties or a little toy to use as a present topper! I’ve even made a newborn sweater in this fashion, just saying’.
