Pine Cone Owl Craft With An Artful Twist

Pine-Cone-Owl-With-sequins-holiday-craftSince this week has been all about owls and owl crafts and painted owls, I just had to try making a pine cone owl because pine cones are the perfect shape, right? Not to mention that natural look of belly feathers! Of course I couldn’t just whip out the felt and copy someone else’s owl pine cone, I had to come up with something just a bit original, realistically because i have no idea where my felt is at the moment, nor if I have anything more than brown and green…..So introducing a pine cone owl with an artful twist, meaning some painted paper scraps and a few little doodads to make it truly original. And while you are at it, make a bunch in all sizes and look into making a whole range of forest creatures such as foxes, porcupines/hedge hogs, mice and more. But first things first, lets make a pine cone owl. And if you are lucky enough to have access to those giant pine cones I grew up with, well make a giant pine cone owl!

Pine-Cone-Owl-With-sequins-holiday-craftYou’ll Need:

  • pine cones
  • watercolor paper and acrylic paint plus a white paint pen
  • adhesive back sparkle craft foam, or felt, or metallic paper
  • sequins
  • paper fasteners
  • a hot glue gun and high tack craft glue (for the sequins)

How To:

  1. Paint a random messy pattern on watercolor paper to use as the wings and face. Cut out wing shapes suitable for your pine cone, and the cut out two pieces for the face as seen. Cut out a piece that is a stand and indicates the owl’s feet.
  2. The feet piece acts as a base to help the pine cone stand up (if needed) so put a big glob of hot glue onto the feet piece and press the pine cone into the glue, holding it to make sure it dries in the desired upright position!
  3. Add details with the white paint pen to the wings and head pieces, and adhere to pine cone with hot glue.
  4. Add a sparkle foam beak and eyes, which look great in several layers.
  5. Use paper fasteners or even wire to make funky head feathers and adhere with hot glue.
  6. If you like use the tacky glue to add sequins, as after all everything looks great with a little sparkle!
  7. You may want to cover the back of the pine cone, but it isn’t necessary if this will be displayed on a shelf. If you need something that will be seen from all sides, make a shawl of sorts instead of two wings and the look from the front will be the same, if you know what I mean? Once you get the shapes right, it is simple to make more!

Enjoy and no go make a whole bunch, hoot hoot hoot!
