Special Occasion DIY Star Cake, For Birthdays, Anniverseries, Or Just Because!

Special-occasion-star-topped-cakeNeed a relatively simple cake decor idea that will wow the crowd, look great from both sides and won’t take hours to make? This special occasion 3D star topped cake is really something to try, and once you have made the stars it can literally be assembled in minutes! I made a bunch of 3D paper stars for Chanukah, and then when I realized I could use them to make this cake, I really couldn’t believe how it all came together so quickly, and looked amazing, especially since it matched the decorations in the room! Of course these 3D stars can be made ahead and then used for a variety of decorations, and if you need something elegant, go with metallic gold or silver, or mix in the metallics, and if you need something for a baby shower, so go with pastels, and if it is for kids, so maybe get some tiny figures to put on the cake or make a scene of somekind beneath the stars! Or opt to do as I did and add a few origami doves, especially great for a wedding anniverysary! Okay, lets learn a few important tips for assembling this super simple yet stunning cake!

You’ll Need:

  • 3D paper star cake toppers, tutorial here
  • a bundt cake or any round cake, my simply delicious non-dairy chocolate cake recipe here
  • a white glaze, my attempt at a white powdered sugar glaze failed, hmmm
  • white sprinkles or white ball sprinkles
  • for the cake stand: a large white dinner plate and a bowl or plant pot
  • gold number candles (optional, we don’t blow out candles*, not a Jewish thing, so they are for decoration)

*Why is blowing out candles not part of our birthday celebrations, ever? Because a candle, or rather the flame, represents a soul, so we do not blow out candles as it is like blowing out a soul, which we would never want to do!

How To:
I did not plan this ahead of time, just sort of figured out the height of the stars as I assembled the cake, but now that you have my example, you can certainly plan! So bake that cake, ahead of time preferably, and once cooled, add glaze the sprinkles and then the fabulous stars and anything else you dream of.

In my opinion a simple cake always looks better when elevated, either on a cake stand, or on an impromptu cake stand which is simply a plate and an upside down bowl!
