DIY Cardboard Playhouse With An Upcycled Box!

DIY cardboard playhouse in a closet
Looking for a fun project to keep the little ones busy this summer? Collect some huge appliance or furniture boxes, collapse them and set aside for that window of time when a great project is just what is needed to keep the little ones excited and engaged! Who doesn’t love a playhouse, especially one you can decorate yourself, and in fact spend days decorating, best of all! While the example here is shown in a closet, this idea can also be done in a wide doorway, or even in a corner, just make sure the keep safety and adult accessibility in mind! One can even make this freestanding by attaching the house to something on the back, which will enable it to safely stand up, like two empty bleach bottles filled with water and tightly sealed, or carboard boxes. One can also make walls, but that gets a bit more complicated and the likely hood of everything staying upright is on the slim side! So take my advice make just the facade of the house this time and enjoy!

DIY cardboard playhouseYou’ll Need:

  • a doorway or closet, or even a corner of a room
  • large sheet or sheets of cardboard, like from a broken down appliance box
  • a craft knife, ruler and pencil, or really strong sharp scissors
  • duct tape or packing tape to tape sections together if needed
  • child friendly paint and crayons to decorate house

How To:

I think this is self explanatory, right? There are so many way to make this idea your own! The main question is where will you cut out this giant piece of cardboard? If using a craft knife you need a surface that will not get damaged and is the right size for this project. Cutting with a craft knife in the air is dangerous, please don’t do that. Cutting with scissors produces questionable results, but if that is the only option, just do it! The key here is creativity, not perfection.

You might choose to cut out the facade in several pieces and then tape together from the back, just don’t forget the door and window, a must!

Give kids a bunch of art supplies with which to decorate the facade, so much fun! You could even do this over a period of a few days. One day bring out crayons, one day bring out paint, and last of all, bring out the collage and mini pom poms!

Enjoy!
