Drinking Straw Star Ornament Craft
There is something about colorful jumbo drinking straws that I find simply irresistable, so a few months back on a trip to my favorite Swedish store, I just had to pick up some more straws in a new pastel color range. Fast forward to Hanukkah crafting, and those straws jumped out at me and said "make some drinking straw star ornaments please", and so there you have it! This is a quick craft (once you get the hang of it) with adorable results so make a bunch of these for that Hanukkah party, or hang them around the house! While you are at it, check out my drinking straw hanukkah garland from last year, as well as my drinking star star bursts, and stay tuned for more drinking star crafts! In the meantime, I've got a few helpful tips that I learned while making this craft, so keep on reading…..
You'll Need:
- 6 drinking straws per star, these are the jumbo kind, but any straws will work
- t-shirt yarn, or anything that you have on hand
- high tack glue (optional, I didn't use any)
How To:
Step 1: Make 2 triangles by first arranging straws as shown in diagram above. Glue joints if desired or if stars will be handled by little kids, as just tyeing them does not result in a secure ornament. You could tie the straws together really firmly but then the straws would get flattened, and that does not look nearly as nice!
Step 2: Binding together three straws as shown by wrapping yarn, string or wire around the joint in the direction shown.
Step 3: If you like you can bind this joint in the other direction as well, but it is not necessary and it is then more difficult to adjust the straws later.
Step 4: Place one triangle on top of another, you'll have to play around with this a bit to find the best way to do this, you'll see what I mean when you get there!
Step 5: Bind the two triangles together as shown by the red slashes. Adjust all the straws such that the star is symmetrical, and that is it!
I have so far only made four of these, but in my opinion the more the better, so make sure you have enough straws to really go to town! And of course, these stars are possibly a starting point for so many great Hanukkah craft ideas, like mobiles, garlands, gift toppers and wall hanging of all kinds, so let those gears turn and come up with something special!
