Vegetable Carving 101: Simple Cucumber Fan Garnish
Isn't this cucumber fan garnish that also loos like a honeysuckle flower lovely? You can make one of these in just a few minutes, and then use it to add a beautiful touch as a garnish on a plate of salad or even fish of some kind. I made mine into a single flower, but you could certainly make a bunch and form a crown or a fanned circle with them, just for starters! Okay, lets get carving!
How To Cut a Simple Cucumber Fan Garnish:
- Cut a medium sized cucumber on the diagonal, removing the end plus another inch or so.
- Using a sharp pointed knife make another cut paralle to the first one, but do not cut all the way through, stop about 1/4" before the end. The cut should be quite thin so that the cucumber "wing" can be bent without breaking. This may take some practice, not to worry!
- Make an odd number of cuts, making sure to cut thinly and evenly.
- Now simply fold every other wing onto itself so that it is tucked between two upright pieces. So very simple!
- Make some carrot leaves by cutting thin slices of carrot on the diagonal! That diagonal trick works everytime, gotta love it!
