A Peek In My Sketchbook: Simple Glass Bottles With Flowers
Sometimes a super simple waterproof ink pen sketch filled in with some watercolor paint can look fresh and fun. After all of the floral sketches I did in various sketchbooks this summer, the time came to introduce some color, and this is the result……not a work of art, but a sweet illustration that one can do rather quickly, even in this large A4 sketchbook! Of course, first practice drawing flowers that you love, then practice drawing simple glass bottles, and then bring them together, and that is it. A sketch like this could be done in so many ways, with a variety of flowers as I did, one with just…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Pomegranate Ink Drawing With Cross Hatching
If you are having a hard time fitting an art practice of some kind into your busy schedule, a smallish sketchbook, might just be THE thing! After six months of a consistent sketchbook/art journal practice I am just thrilled by the concept in general, and have gotten over my fear of making mistakes or entries that aren’t up to snuff in my journal, and I am here to encourage you to give it a try. There is just something about creating in a journal that is not restricting as I always thought, but rather freeing, and best of all, you don’t have to figure out what to do with that…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Simple Glass Vases With Sprigs Doodle
It is true, with the week long Jewish holiday of Succot coming up this Friday night, now is the time get to work on the Succah decorations! Truthfully, the little game going on in my head right now is whether to use existing decorations as much as possible (some of which haven’t seen the succah for a few good years) or invest precious time in creating new decorations? As I type this I am realizing that maybe it is better to put my time into my sketchbook and my developing art practice, rather than new succah decorations, other than some new things to fill in the holes, as after all,…

Negative Shape Flower Painting Exercise In My Sketchbook
Negative shape painting is a great art technique that every crafter out to have up their sleeve, as it is great for making art and illustrations of all kinds, and especially wonderful when introduced to kids! This technique would be perfect for making art for the Succah, (think pomegranates, fig leaves, apples, olive branches etc.) since now is the time to gets those gears turning as far as succah decorations are concerned! I did this vibrant flower illustration/painting in my landscape sized art journal, right next to a little floral drawing study done with markers, as the paper in this sketchbook is very thick. Markers can be fun, but the…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Floral Sketch With Colored Pencils
Today was the minor fast called the Fast of Gedaliah, which always takes place the day after Rosh HaShana, and whose timing is excellent after all those festive meals! While fasting and catching up on some computer work after 3 plus days of being unplugged, I came across a few photos of the oleander blooms in my container garden, and was overtaken by the need to draw the flowers, using the photo as reference, and so I did, as I am committed to keeping my art journal/sketchbook practice alive and well. So I grabbed the large journal I’m currently working in (I also have a smallish watercolor paper landscape journal…

Sketch Flowers Over The Abstract Watercolor Landscape To Improve It!
In the last 5 or so months as I’ve upped my sketchbook game considerably, I’ve also been slowly mastering the art of fixing mistakes, as pages in a sketchbook should depict a journey, but in my case not the stumbles, I prefer to forget about those! So, while my other fixes have been via paper collage or acrylic paint, fixing a watercolor landscape that isn’t pleasing is actually a fun creative endeavor, as once you realize that the not so great watercolor sketch becomes a background for something else, ahhhh, the fun can begin. On a whim I decided to sketch a few large flowers not in proportion to the…
