Fallen Soldier Memorial Day In Israel
Yesterday was Memorial Day here in Israel, the day in which the entire nation remembers those who have given their lives for our country, for our safety, and for us, as a people. One minute of silence is observed country-wide with a siren that sounds in the morning……..and if one happens to be on the freeway at that time, well it is truly a moving sight as all traffic stops and everyone gets out of their cars. I have a feeling this doesn't happen anywhere else in the world, and it is truly a beautiful thing. Despite our differences politically and religiously, at the end of the day we really…

Braided Garlic Is A Passover Tradition!
As you may or may not know, the holiday of Passover is all about tradition, yes, you know, Jewish tradition! If not for the strictness with which we observe these traditions we would not thousands of years later still be remembering and reliving our deliverance as a nation from slavery, got it? Now as you may also know the definition of "Jewish tradition" varies greatly as we the Jewish people are a very varied bunch, with skin color that ranges from the palest white to almost the darkest black and customs that were developed over the thousands of years in all the places that we wondered to. While all Jews…

Rain At Last On The First Day Of Kislev And Moroccan Poufs
Chodesh Tov, wishing you all a happy new month, the Jewish month of Kislev! Rosh Chodesh, (rosh means head, chodesh means month) the first day of the month, is a special day which includes special prayers in the synagogue, a half day of school and maybe a special meal or activity for the family. Today I treated my kids with hot chocolate ready and waiting as they came in the door as it was positively pouring, like really really pouring! Where you live you may wish that it sometimes rained a bit less, but here in Israel, the more rain the better. For us given our hillside location that generally…

Thank You Signs From The Heart And Teaching Kids To Give Thanks
Saying thank you and really meaning it is one of those little things that really makes a huge difference, not just for the receiver, but for the giver as well. In today's world where modernization has brought with it a feeling of entitlement, we have to work extra hard to teach our children (and ourselves) how to be considerate, caring and grateful! In the Jewish tradition we give thanks the minute we open our eyes each morning, but that doesn't mean we know how to express thanks to those in their lives! "One can never say thank you enough", is my motto, and while this comes easily to some, I…

Yom HaShoah Yesterday, Schlissel Challah Today,
Since I do feel that is it my duty here on the blog to report on all things Jewish on the calendar, I'm just writing a short post about two seemingly unconnected things that are really quite connected. What is the connection between Schlissel challah and Holocaust Rememberance Day, Yom HaShoah? First of all, yesterday was the day observed in Israel to remember the Holocaust…….sirens are sounded, traffic stops and people everywhere stand in silence. Experienceing this first hand especially in the middle of a busy city or on a highway is really quite moving, though there is a debat e among some Jews whether indeed standing in silence is…

First Almond Blossoms On Rosh Chodesh Adar!
Wishing everyone a Chodesh Tov, (a good month) on this first day of the Jewish month of Adar! Adar is a month of great joy and so it only seems fitting that I share with you these gorgeous photos of the first almond blossoms that I saw today while out on a little hike with my boys. When the almond trees bloom in both pink and white, it is truly a spectacular sight around our city here in Northern Israel, and the first sign that Spring is on its way! Personally, no matter what else is going on, just one glimpse of these flowering trees and it just makes me…
