Ceramic Wall Pocket Craft For Kids
My 12 year old son and I are getting in some very precious "mommy and me" time by spending an evening once a week at a local ceramics studio, and i have lots of fun things to share! Not to mention a big realization that my little stint with ceramics about four years ago that wasn't all that satisfying, wasn't because ceramics really isn't for me as I had concluded, but because the clay that we were given to work with wasn't for me! At this studio the clay fires white and I can therefore use clear bright colors, or black and white, and I'm loving it! (Plus maybe because…

Remembering Fallen Soldiers And A Six Day War Memorial
Today is Yom HaZikaron, the memorial day for fallen soldiers here in Israel. Today is a solemn day, which is taken quite seriously by the general population, and enforced by the government with mandatory closing of stores and sirens sounding in every city, both last night and this morning. If one happens to be on the road, say in a big city or on a freeway when the siren sounds for one minute, it is really quite a moving experience, as traffic stops completely and drivers get out of their cars to stand in silence. What can I say? Today is a day of such raw emotion for our country,…

The Gravesite Of Elkana, Father Of Shmuel HaNavi
This Passover vacation we took small trips close to home, and at long last visited some favorite sites that I hadn't been to in at least 15 years, and thus had yet to share with my little ones. Introducing one of my all time favorites, the burial cave of Elkana, the father of Shmuel HaNavi (Samuel the Prophet)! It is almost hard to wrap one's head around the fact that this site, on the road between Tsfat and Meron, in the Northern Gallilee area called Kadita, is thousands of years old! (!0th Century BCE) As with all historic burial caves, a small building has been erected over the cave, to…

Welcome To Craft Schooling Sunday!
Welcome to Craft Schooling Sunday! Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by last week to contribute their creativity in this little spot where bloggers from around the world convene every week! It's hard to believe that Passover has been over for a week now, as we're still trying to put the house back together after the big change-over that takes place in our kitchen, as well as all the other places in our home on account of welcoming a pack of guests and trying to get organized before the holiday. We are now in the 49 day period on the Jewish calendar called the "Omer" which is a period…

Yom HaShoah Yesterday, Schlissel Challah Today,
Since I do feel that is it my duty here on the blog to report on all things Jewish on the calendar, I'm just writing a short post about two seemingly unconnected things that are really quite connected. What is the connection between Schlissel challah and Holocaust Rememberance Day, Yom HaShoah? First of all, yesterday was the day observed in Israel to remember the Holocaust…….sirens are sounded, traffic stops and people everywhere stand in silence. Experienceing this first hand especially in the middle of a busy city or on a highway is really quite moving, though there is a debat e among some Jews whether indeed standing in silence is…

Popsicle Stick Playground Craft For Kids
If you are looking for a fun craft to help kids build creativity, look no further! Creating a little park or playground using popsicle sticks and recycled cardboard tubes (for starters) is so much fun, and afterwards the kids can actually use their creation as a playscape for Playmobil people or any another little dolls or animals. In the past we have made a miniature swingset from recyclables, as well as a mini playground craft using skewers, though this popsicle stick playground was actually made by my ten year old son in school with a group of boys as part of a larger project. I am so proud of him!…
