Paint A Garden On A Milk Carton Craft

Painted-milk-cartons-craftNot every craft has to have a specific end point in sight, sometimes just getting out some milk cartons and painting gardens on them can be a great creative activity that leads to? And actually, now that Spring is in the air, a row of milk carton houses with blooming gardens could be a fun craft. I’ll admit, when I painted these milk cartons with a little friend I had in mind making a Chanukah village, but that never happened, so now the milk cartons are hanging out waiting for their future use, maybe a village filled with greenery and flowers for Shavuous? In any case, just getting out the paints and paint brushes and painting on a 3D object is a great way to loosen up and have some fun, I know I did!

Keep on reading for some tips for painting milk cartons…..

Painted-garden-milk-cartonYou’ll Need:

  • acrylic craft paints
  • a little patience for the first coat
  • well washed-out milk cartons

How To:

When doing this project with smallish children, it is wise for the adult to paint the first two base coats before beginning and setting that aside to dry. Since milk cartons are waxed you must use acrylic craft paint, you know the little bottles that are only a dollar or so each, or something better quality of course is fine too. It is sometimes recommended to sand your milk carton first, but I did not do that, and the paint sticks just fine……a good two coats that is.

One could also make this into a mixed-media project by incorporating cut paper collage over the painted milk cartons to add details or even just more plants and trees, hmm I might just try that! Happy creativity!
