Giant Origami Giraffe DIY
Remember the giraffe themed birthday party that I threw for my 11 year old son? Well, while I shared with you a bunch of giraffe birthday crafts, I didn't actually get around to sharing the biggest giraffe statement of them all: giant origami giraffes snacking on branches with paper leaves! I have to say, these giraffes just make everyone smile, and once you get the hang of how to fold them, they are really a fantastic addition to any party, whether it be a birthday party, a baby shower, or you name it! These giraffes were actually a huge centerpiece on the birthday table, as those branches are simply hung from our dining room chandelier! Giant giraffe origami anyone? Lets get crafting!
You'll Need:
- yellow wrapping paper (heavier weight paper works as well, but is much more difficult to fold)
- orange and blue card stock for spots and birthday hat
- fur yarn or the yarn of your choice for mane and tail
- small pieces of cardboard for base
- flat skewers (may or may not be necessary)
- real branches with paper leaves tutorial
- how to fold an origami giraffe video, I used this one for best results
How To:
- Practice folding origami giraffe according to video, with small square, don't give up, you'll get it, and once you do you'll be so happy you stuck with it!
- For largest giraffe, make a square using the whole width of the wrapping paper, and use that to fold giraffe. For smaller giraffe use a slightly smaller square.
- Yes, I know you are wondering how tall these giraffes are, well gotta go measure them, but the largest one is roughly 2 feet tall.
- Add spots and yarn mane and tail using hot glue.
- Add birthday hat if desired.
- Make stepping stone shaped cardboard platforms to enable the giraffe to stand up. Slightly fold ends of legs and attach to stand with hot glue.
- If your giraffes still seem wobbly, cut flat skewers to tuck into folds of legs and adhere with hot glue. (I only did this after giraffes were standing for a few weeks)
- That is it, have fun with this!

Thanks Mich, just wish I had time to photograph these on a black background so you could really see that white mane! Alack alas, I need a photographer by my side to accomplish all that!

Those giraffes, and the branches, are the cutest things I’ve ever seen! So creative!
