Giant Origami Giraffe DIY

Giant Origami Giraffes

Remember the giraffe themed birthday party that I threw for my 11 year old son? Well, while I shared with you a bunch of giraffe birthday crafts, I didn't actually get around to sharing the biggest giraffe statement of them all: giant origami giraffes snacking on branches with paper leaves! I have to say, these giraffes just make everyone smile, and once you get the hang of how to fold them, they are really a fantastic addition to any party, whether it be a birthday party, a baby shower, or you name it! These giraffes were actually a huge centerpiece on the birthday table, as those branches are simply hung from our dining room chandelier! Giant giraffe origami anyone? Lets get crafting!

Giant Origami Giraffe DIY

 You'll Need:

  • yellow wrapping paper (heavier weight paper works as well, but is much more difficult to fold)
  • orange and blue card stock for spots and birthday hat
  • fur yarn or the yarn of your choice for mane and tail
  • small pieces of cardboard for base
  • flat skewers (may or may not be necessary)
  • real branches with paper leaves tutorial
  • how to fold an origami giraffe video, I used this one for best results

Giant Origami Giraffes For Giraffe Birthday

 How To:

  1. Practice folding origami giraffe according to video, with small square, don't give up, you'll get it, and once you do you'll be so happy you stuck with it!
  2. For largest giraffe, make a square using the whole width of the wrapping paper, and use that to fold giraffe. For smaller giraffe use a slightly smaller square.
  3. Yes, I know you are wondering how tall these giraffes are, well gotta go measure them, but the largest one is roughly 2 feet tall.
  4. Add spots and yarn mane and tail using hot glue.
  5. Add birthday hat if desired.
  6. Make stepping stone shaped cardboard platforms to enable the giraffe to stand up. Slightly fold ends of legs and attach to stand with hot glue.
  7. If your giraffes still seem wobbly, cut flat skewers to tuck into folds of legs and adhere with hot glue. (I only did this after giraffes were standing for a few weeks)
  8. That is it, have fun with this!
