DIY Paint Splatter Paper For Holiday Crafting!
With Chanukah and gift giving season quickly approaching, now is a great time to have some fun making your own decorative paper for crafting! And while you are covering blank sheets of watercolor paper or mixed media paper with layers of colorful and messy drops, splatters and patterns, you may just learn a thing or two about abstract painting, and how colors work with one another, not to mention that putting paint to paper without a plan can be just downright relaxing and enjoyable! There are so many ways to use artful and vibrant painted paper like the sheets I’ve made here, and the main thing is not to get…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: An Abstract Pear and Peonies!
Yes dear readers, I am back on the road with my my sketchbook/art journal journey which took a short hiatus due to all the Jewish holiday preparations and celebrations. I have to admit, I REALLY missed drawing and painting, which came as a huge surprise to me, as the only specific creative activity I recall missing during the holidays is crocheting! So,apparently the painting/drawing journey has taken a hold on me, and I am downright pleased, as this means that I can easily hop back on the wagon and continue filling my art journals with paintings and drawings. It is true, painting in a sketchbook with paper that is meant…

A Peek In My Sketchbook: Whimsical Watercolor and Pen Animals!
Now that I have finally embraced the idea of using my sketchbook to experiment with all kinds of drawing and painting, things are starting to get interesting! I have never drawn anything even remotely similar to the whimsical animals I’m sharing with you here, and I actually really love the results. Stretching one’s comfort zone is the key to creative growth, and if not in a sketchbook, which is just for you, then where? With the holiday of Succot now behind us and Chanukah coming in eight weeks, now is a great time to start thinking about Chanukah, as planning and creating ahead of time means you can fill your home with light and joy, which is really what it is all about. I’d also recommend taking stock of the supplies, however basic, you have on hand and using those, (note to self) as that is one way to light the creative flame! Okay, I really wanted to tell you about a little discovery I made a few weeks ago regarding creating texture with kosher salt. Making your own patterned paper is a great…

DIY Tree Branch With Colorful Leaves Wall Art
We are now on the third day (of seven) of the wonderful Jewish holiday of Succot, and while I am not doing any crafting, I can stop by here to share my favorite succah decoration with you! And, unlike some Succah decorations, this one is truly a work of art, and can be used year round indoors, or for a special event or to mark a new season. You decide, but if you are anything like me, you won’t want to stop at just one, which I did not! After making the first version, a tree of life with gold leaves, I just had to make another colorful version with…

A Mixed Media Rooster Painting For Yom Kippur!
Tonight we usher in the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which includes a mandatory 25 hour fast for all those healthy and over the age of bar/bat mitzvah, and in my case a day spent in the synagogue with our community, which is the only place I’d want to be on this day of atonement. Since my kids are also in synagogue with me and my husband, I no longer have to worry about them! Mothers with young kids try to come to synagogue for the evening service, which is very beautiful, and for the last service at the end of the day when the shofar is sounded and the…
