Tiered Birthday (Or Wedding) Cake Gift Box

Birthday Cake Gift Box With Frog topper

My tiered birthday or wedding cake gift box actually happened a few months ago when I was cleaning for Passover and trying to get rid of stuff. Of course round cardboard boxes aren't something one should throw out, but as they hadn't been put to use for years I kept eyething them for a possible project. And then, yippee, this cake box using packing peanuts as frosting came to mind, and it was made really in a matter of minutes. I think it took longer to actually heat up the glue gun than to put the pieces together, which was fortunate as there really wasn't any free time for crafting with Passover quickly approaching.

Now several months later, having used this cake three times for various birthdays, I finally got around to adding the little flag bunting, which is the finishing touch that was missing, phew! Follow along as I explain how this cake was made, and don't fret if you don't have any round boxes collecting dust, use your imagination to make your own version with whatever you can find! Square boxes would certainly work too, as would stacking food containers, like cans, that don't necessarily work as boxes. Enjoy!

Birthday Cake Gift Box With Packing Peanuts

You'll Need:

  • 2 round boxes with tops, or even two round cookie tins, one smaller than the other
  • packing peanuts or something else that is easily applied and could look like frosting like pom pom trim or lace etc.
  • colored card stock and or paint if you need to cover your boxes, mine were used as is
  • washi tape or trim or ribbon, what ever works for you!
  • hot glue
  • a fun figure or figures of some kind to put on top
  • a five minute washi tape cake topper, follow the link for instructions

How To:

This is what I did, your steps may be different depending on what supplies you use to make this tiered cake box.

  1. Glue the bottom of the purple box to the top of the red box with hot glue.
  2. Apply washi tape to red box around rim of top and around box.
  3. Cut a green scalloped piece (actually from a stray round green top from the same set of boxes) to go around rim or purple box and affix with hot glue.
  4. Hot glue packing peanuts to areas as shown.
  5. Make 5 minute washi tape cake topper and stick it into the packing peanuts. This way it is easily removed and can be replaced with a topper made for a particular occasion!
  6. Add your little figure, mine is not glued on, you know because i'm planning on getting a lot of mileage out of this cake and a frog might not always be the perfect addition.

And that dear readers is it, so simple and so much fun! If you buy those natural round boxes at a craft supply store, leave them brown and just apply trim and "icing" in pastel colors for a fabulous look that I'm dreaming of right now!
