Crocheted Rustic Fruit Basket To Make From Old T-Shirts

Crocheted Chunky Fruit Basket From DIY T-shirt Yarn

What can I tell you? I just adore this little crocheted basket that I made using yarn from some of my boy's old t-shirts and striped polo style shirts. And in my humble opiinion one can never really have too many baskets, and fun rustic ones like this add a really nice seasonal touch, especially for fall. Dont you just love persimmons, I'm already lamenting the day when they'll no longer be in season……but I digress. The yarn that I make from t-shirts is never as thin as the commercial t-shirt yarn, which means that you can actually make a much sturdier basket with your cast offs!

Like some more information on how to make some yourself? Keep on reading…….

Crocheted Chunky Fruit Basket From T-Shirts

 You'll Need:

  • 10mm metal crochet hook (the plastic ones break, but give it a try if that is all that you have)
  • homemade t-shirt yarn
  • a love for all things a bit rustic and imperfect (especially if you'll be using yarn from lots of different garments)

How To:

  1. Make a magic circle and crochet 8sc into the circle, and join to the first stitch with a slip stitch.
  2. Ch 2, and hdc into same stitch. Make 2 hdc into every stitch around and join to ch2 with a slip stitch.
  3. Ch 2 and hdc into same stitch. *Hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, and continue from * around, joining with a slip stitch.
  4. Continue to crochet the base of your basket by increasing in every row such that the number of hdcs between the sets of 2hdc grows by 1 in each row.
  5. When you want to form the sides of the basket do a row of hdc in the third loop, this makes a nice ring on the base and helps form the side nicely.
  6. Crochet sides with hdc, and do understand that it is hard to crochet a basket that doesn't cup, so baskets with shorter sides (mine has 4 rows) are preferable.

That is it, enjoy! Leave me a comment if you have any questions, and happy crocheting!
